Our Town

Nearly everyone in America has seen, read, or heard of the timeless classic Our Town by Thornton Wilder. First staged in 1938, it has become Wilder’s most renowned and frequently performed play. Ironically, although a staple of high school and community theatres, the play began as an avant-garde masterpiece. Set at the turn of the 20th century, Our Town focuses on the everydayness of the lives of people in the small fictional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire. Its focus on the mundane and common allows the audience to see just how universal and extraordinary even the simplest moments of our lives can be. Wilder urges us to reflect on the fleeting, but precious, nature of our lives despite the near impossibility of the task. Just as youth is wasted on the young, so too may life be wasted on the living.
